LED Digital Signs Upgrade City of Milpitas, California
When the City of Milpitas, California wanted to upgrade the digital signage at City Hall, the project didn’t require starting over. Instead, BLR Visual Communications helped the city modernize its existing monument sign with a new, higher-resolution LED display while preserving and refurbishing the existing sign structure.
The result was a significant upgrade in display quality and content capabilities without unnecessarily replacing the entire monument sign.
Upgrading an Existing LED Monument Sign
The City of Milpitas already had a 12-foot-wide by 3-foot-high LED sign at City Hall. However, the existing 20 mm monochrome display offered limited resolution and content capabilities compared with newer digital signage technology.
BLR recommended upgrading the display to an 8 mm Watchfire digital sign. The tighter pixel spacing provides a much higher-resolution display, giving the city greater flexibility in how information can be presented.
Modernizing the Sign Without Replacing Everything
An LED signage upgrade doesn’t always mean the entire sign needs to be removed and rebuilt.
For the Milpitas project, the existing monument sign body was refurbished and incorporated into the new design. This allowed the city to retain the existing structure while updating the components that would make the biggest difference in the sign’s appearance and functionality.
New laser-cut aluminum lettering from Gemini Sign Products was also incorporated into the updated monument sign.
More Options for City Communications
The upgraded Watchfire display gives the City of Milpitas more flexibility in the types of information it can share with the community.
Using Watchfire Ignite, the city can display text, graphics, and video rather than being limited to the capabilities of the previous monochrome display. That gives City Hall a more versatile tool for communicating announcements, events, public information, and other timely messages.
When Is It Time to Upgrade an Older Digital Sign?
Organizations with an existing LED sign don’t necessarily need to replace the entire signage system when the display begins to feel outdated.
Depending on the condition and design of the existing structure, upgrading the digital display and refurbishing the surrounding sign can provide a more modern result while making use of components that are still working well.
Factors such as pixel pitch, viewing distance, display size, content requirements, existing sign condition, and the way the sign will be used should all be considered when planning an LED signage upgrade.
